ENGINEERING SERVICES EXAMINATION(ESE) NOTIFICATION 2025

ESE(Engineering Services Exam) is a national level exam conducted by UPSC to recruit engineers from various disciplines. Selection for the posts is done in three stages - Preliminary Examination, Mains Examination and Interview. Selected candidates are posted as group A/B officers to various services under Indian Engineering Services(IES). A total of 232 vacancies are released by UPSC dates 18.09.2024. What are the engineering disciplines to which candidates can be posted?

  • Category I-Civil Engineering. 
  • Category II-Mechanical Engineering. 
  • Category III-Electrical Engineering. 
  • Category IV-Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

What are the services/posts to which Civil Engineering candidates can be posted?

Civil Engineering candidates can be posted in any one of the from a total number of 8 services.

  • (i) Central Engineering Service (Civil) 
  • (ii) Central Engineering Service (Roads), Group-A (Civil Engineering Posts). 
  • (iii) Survey of India Group 'A' Service. 
  • (iv) *AEE (Civil) in Border Roads Engineering Service. 
  • (v) Indian Defence Service of Engineers. 
  • (vi) AEE (QS&C) in MES Surveyor Cadre. 
  • (vii) Indian Skill Development Service. 
  • (viii) Central Water Engineering (Group ‘A’) Service.

What are the services/posts to which Mechanical Engineering candidates can be posted?

Mechanical Engineering candidates can be posted in any one of the from a total number of 7 services/posts.

What is the Minimum Educational qualification required for ESE?

A candidate must have obtained a degree in any engineering discpline from any institute that is recognised by University Grants Comission. Candidates must choose any one of the engineering discipline from the above mention engineering discplines during form filling.

What are the vacancies for Engineering Services Examination 2025?

The total number of vacancies for Engineering Services Examination 2025 are 232, while the detailed breakup of vacancies for the disciplines and posts are yet to be released.

What are the different stages in ESE?

There are three stages in Engineering Services Exam 2025 :
  • (i) Preliminary Exam
  • (ii) Mains Exam
  • (iii) Interview

What is the Preliminary stage Exam pattern?

The preliminary exam consists of 2 papers.
  • (i) Paper 1 - General Studies, consists of 100 questions for a total of 200 Marks
  • (ii)Paper 2 - Technical specific (based on discipline selected during form filling) - consists of 150 questions 300 Marks
The candidates who cleared the cutoff for both the papers will be selected for Mains Examination.


What is the ESE 2025 Mains Exam pattern?

Mains exam consists of 2 papers.
  • (i)Paper - 1 : Technical specific, conventional type exam for a maximum 300 Marks 
  • (ii)Paper - 2 : Technical specific, conventional type exam for a maximum 300 Marks 
The candidates has to the cutoff for both Prelims and Mains will be selected for Personal Interview.

Personal interview consists of 200 marks. A final merit list will be prepared based on Prelims, Mains and Personal interview Marks.

What is the Syllabus for ESE 2025?

The syllabus for paper-1 in prelims exam is same for all the candidates while paper-2 of prelims exam and paper 1, paper 2 of Mains exam are technical specific. The detailed syllabus for both general and technical specific are available here.

How to apply for ESE 2025?

The candidates who fullfill the eligibility requirements have to visit UPSC and complete One-Time Registration(OTR) and proceed to fill the details and upload required documents. Candidates are advised to go through official notification for required documents and their size. The last date to apply is 08.10.2024 till 6pm
